The meaning

Ben Goldwasser described “Time to Pretend” as a song about “becoming rock stars, and destroying our lives,” while Andrew VanWyngarden called it an “ironic mission statement type thing.” 2 That framing makes the opening rush toward money, status, drugs, and international glamour deliberately double-edged: the characters sell themselves a version of success that already contains its collapse.

The song’s first verse treats ordinary adulthood as the alternative to a thrilling but destructive fantasy. The question about office jobs and the morning commute gives the rock-star dream its emotional force, because it rejects routine before revealing a believable replacement. The repeated “fated to pretend” suggests that the characters are not simply choosing freedom, they are committing to a role and trying to believe in it.

The second verse exposes the losses hidden by that role. References to playgrounds, digging up worms, a mother, a sister, a dog, and time alone turn the song from swagger into nostalgia. The lyrics suggest that chasing an image of glamorous adulthood requires abandoning both intimate relationships and the unremarkable freedom of childhood.

Its ending is especially bleak because the fantasy is imagined as a cycle rather than a triumph: relationships become disposable, children and divorce become plot points, and excess culminates in death.
