The meaning
Andrew VanWyngarden described the central idea plainly: he wanted people to remember that even people who commit terrible acts were once “little innocent beings.” 1 The opening image of a child moving toward the world without time to consider consequences frames innocence as active, curious, and not yet accountable for its effects.
The chorus, “Control yourself, take only what you need from it,” gives the song its moral pressure. Rather than nostalgically treating childhood as a place to stay forever, it suggests that maturity requires limits: desire, attention, and power need to be handled responsibly. That connects with VanWyngarden’s concern about musicians possessing a large public voice and what they should do with it. 1
