Escapism. is about numbing the pain of a breakup by any means necessary: drinking, drugs, nightlife, and reckless hookups. After the man RAYE loved ended the relationship 1, she goes out in a little black dress on a mission not to feel how her heart is ripping 1. She has said the chorus is a desperate plea not to feel reality in the moment she is in 1. The meaning

The song opens in the middle of a night out (“I met him at the bar, it was twelve or something”) because RAYE wanted a film-like flashback that breaks the story up rather than telling it in order 1. The context arrives a verse later: “the man that I love sat me down last night / And he told me that it’s over.” That breakup is a key plot point, drawn from the man she loved ending the relationship 1. She has described the line as playing on both “dumb decision” and “done decision,” capturing the ambiguity of whether the split was foolish or simply final 1. What follows is not processing. It is avoidance. “I don’t wanna feel how my heart is rippin’,” she sings, then “I don’t wanna feel, so I stick to sippin’” and heads out on the town with a “simple mission” 1.

That mission is dressed up as glamour. RAYE has said the little black dress “may just be an item of clothing” but “symbolizes so much more than that,” standing for a heartbroken woman going out with intent 1.
