“FRIENDS” is Marshmello’s self-described “friend-zone anthem,” written to be sent to someone as an unmistakable signal that they’re only ever going to be friends 1. It was inspired by an actual long-time friend, someone Marshmello had known since childhood, who started acting like romance was inevitable between them 2 4. What grounds the song beyond a generic pop trope is that Marshmello has confirmed it’s drawn from a specific relationship: “this whole situation was about my friend who I’ve been friends with since I was young” 2. That’s the source of the lyric “I known you since we were like ten,” and it’s why the song leans so hard on a sibling comparison rather than casual distance, Marshmello has said of the same person, “We’ve known each other since we were young...
