Clairo has described Bags as being “definitely about one of my first experiences with a girl” 1 and about “learning to be comfortable in a place of the unknown” 1. That unknown was both romantic and practical. She did not know if the other person liked girls at all, “let alone me,” and the two were already “really good friends,” which made the next step hard to picture 1. A first experience with a girl, she has said, also made her “read into things a lot more” 1.

The song opens with the two of them sitting on a couch 1. Clairo has said the track emphasizes that scene: “us not really talking about how we feel, us just existing together next to each other is way better than me expressing how I feel and it going sour” 1.
